HOME SAFE HOME FOR KIDS

Comfort and Safety are the essential attributes of kid-friendly homes! Children are naturally curious, and they love to explore a lot. Whether our kids are crawling, toddling, or even driving, it’s our job to keep them safe from the hidden dangers at home. For expectant parents, it can be overwhelming to look around the home house to see what changes should be made to keep their kids safe.

First-time parents may ask – do I have to baby-proof my home? And the answer is a resounding YES! Research shows that children are more likely to be injured at home than anywhere else. Part of that may be because kids spend much time at home compared to other places. To make it easier for you, we at Neelys Interiors, the top best interior designer in Chennai, have collated a childproofing checklist to ensure safety at home for kids.

Design Architecture of the home, by default, considers adults’ comfort and functionality. We need to start viewing the design concerning kids’ needs and comfort.

How about a Room By Room Check!!!

Living room

Beware of sharp ends, edges and corners. Ensure the furniture is covered so that kids get bumped. Furniture doesn’t apply to the bigger ones, even a Tri Stool can hurt. Most importantly if your kids are hyperactive, use a wall strap for large furniture and other delicate items like TV screens. This will prevent them from banging on the floor even if your kids are messing around with them in your absence. Door stoppers, Shelf closure knobs, and cushioned corners – Important attributes to consider.

Kitchen

Moms tend to have productive works at Kitchen, having naughty kids around, always looking out for some delicious snacks. This implies, kids are around their moms, to help them up in cooking. So they explore a lot in Kitchen. To keep them safe first and foremost it is better to keep knives, scissors, and other sharp utensils, preferably inside a drawer or a cabinet at a substantial height out of your child’s reach. Cook on the back burners of your cooking units or stoves whenever possible. Make sure that the handles of pots and pans are turned towards the wall not hanging in the air so that children couldn’t get bumped in them. And mainly try keeping all the flammable props away from children’s reach.

The staircase

Stair Gate is the Must. Don’t even leave them unlocked and ensure kids are not unsupervised when you have stairs at home. While constructing your staircase, make sure that the steps aren’t too big and the gaps between the rails are completely closed. The floor material used for the steps shouldn’t be much slippery.

Bathroom

High probability that kids are accompanied by parents over here. But make sure non-slippery floorings are used to avoid kids from falling. Pay extra attention while in the bathtub or shower. Also, by keeping them away from switchboards.

Now a days Kid friendly home designs ensure props like home barricades, fences and partitions. Focus more on the kid safety protocols while building or designing home. You can reserve a space for your kid and put them safe and of course under your supervision, inside their space. This will give them their own space and they will start being independent and safe at the same time. Magic trick here – You get your time and space too!!!

Mindful to cover unused electrical outlets and unplug other electrical appliances, when not in use. Keeping the windows and balcony closed, constructing properly closed rails wherever needed is also one of few things that need to be noted.

We recommend parents get on the floor at their baby's eye level and look around for other needs for Childproofing. It helps them look at their home differently, and it's easier to spot things.
